SUMMARY:Natural Dyeing in the Orchard
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to use locally grown flowers to create beautiful patterns on fabric\, and create your own flower pounded tote bag to take home\n\n\nWorkshop Description\nCome out and enjoy a morning of art in the Orchard! This workshop will walk you through all the steps of how to use locally grown flowers and natural dyeing to create beautiful patterns on fabric. Using the technique of flower pounding\, all participants will get to create their own beautiful naturally dyed tote bag to take home. This workshop will also include a demonstration of how to prepare fabric for natural dyeing so that you can continue to practise this new skill at home! All supplies are included in this workshop\, however our number of hammers available may be limited. Please bring your own if possible to help the workshop run smoothly! \n \nBe sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \n \nGetting here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bike\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible. We are located right on the galloping goose\, and you are welcome to bring bikes into the Orchard to lock them up safely. \nIf you are driving\, there are 8 parking spots located at the end of Stancil lane\, 1 of which will be reserved as accessible for the duration of the workshop. Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not park in the large driveway on the south side of the street. Additional parking can be found along the street on High St and Eaton Ave. \n \nAbout the Instructor\nZoe Land (she/they) works for Lifecycles Project as the seasonal education assistant. She is a science illustrator with over a two decades of artistic experience. Inspired by nature\, they love observing the rich biodiversity in their own backyard. With a background in Zoology and Studio Arts\, their interdisciplinary skills help combine their passions into detailed science illustrations\, and other natural creations. \n \nHow to Register for this Event\nThis workshop is in person only. Please dress appropriately for all types of weather\, as the workshop will be hosted outside in the orchard. \nThis workshop is available on a sliding scale basis. Please pay in alignment with your financial privilege to help us continue to offer tickets in this way\, and support those in your community with less financial privilege to attend our workshops. DESCRIPTION:Joins us at Welland Orchard to learn how to turn extra apples into juice using a variety of methods\n\n\nWorkshop Description\nLearn about and try your hand at a range of different pressing and juicing options to turn extra apples into delicious juice! This workshop will cover how to use a range of tools and equipment including fruit crushers\, bladder presses\, steam juicers and manual presses as well as some at home DIY options. DESCRIPTION:Joins us at Welland Orchard to learn how to turn extra fruit in shelf stable preserves!\n\n\nWorkshop Description\nCome and learn how to safely preserve your extra fruit to last through the winter! This workshop will cover the basics of water bath canning and set you up with everything you need to know to safely make your own shelf stable preserves at home. We will also cover an introduction to some other preservation methods including fermenting apple juice into apple cider vinegar! At the end of the workshop\, you will receive a jar of jam to take home. \nPlease come prepared for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \n \nGetting here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bike\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible. Raised to value local food systems\, they have been working and volunteering for organizations related to sustainable agriculture and ecosystem health since their early teens. Their educational background is in Gender Studies\, Environmental Studies and Restoration of Natural Systems. For Ella\, the links between healthy food\, healthy people and healthy ecosystems are clear. Ella is also passionate about art\, and has a textile art practice. This is a way to (literally) weave together arts and environmentalism with their focus on reused materials\, sheep to yarn explorations and natural dying. Ella is a settler of Scottish and English descent\, and has been an uninvited guest on W̱SÁNEĆ and lək̓ʷəŋən territories for the past 10 years. They were born and raised on the territories of the Ktunaxa and Secwépemc peoples. \nHow to Register for this Event\nThis workshop is in person only. SUMMARY:Backyard Mushroom Cultivation
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to set up a perennial mushroom bed in your own backyard and enjoy edible mushrooms for years to come!\n\n\nWorkshop Description\n The main mushroom species discussed in this workshop will be Pleurotus ostreatus. Commonly called oyster mushrooms\, this species is a fabulous type of fungi found naturally in temperate and subtropical forests around the world (often found growing wild on trees in these parts). Not only are these mushrooms beautiful\, but they are also a culinary delicacy and have been found to have many environmental benefits. \n \nThe workshop will run for 2 hours\, in 4 parts that includes: \n\nTheoretical learning about general mushroom cultivation and the mushrooms we will see that day\,\nMaintenance of established mushroom beds\, \nPreparation and inoculation of mushroom logs at the Welland Orchard\,\nAnd creation of a small Blue Oyster mushroom buckets to take home.\n\n \nThe goal of this workshop is to learn about basic mushroom cultivation\, both in perennial garden spaces and in buckets\, and make you confident in growing your own mushrooms at home. The participants will get to inoculate mushroom logs and each of the participant will get the chance to prepare their own Blue Oyster mushroom bucket to take home to start off their mushroom growing adventure! These mushroom buckets are suitable for indoor or outdoor growing. \nBe sure to come dressed for the elements as this workshop will be held outdoors. \n \nGetting here\nAs there is limited parking available at the orchard\, please bike\, walk\, bus or carpool if possible.
