Harvesting Abundance
Fruit Tree Projects work to minimize the waste of tree fruit by harvesting and distributing it through the community. It begins as a way to make use of a valuable and neglected food source, help people gain access to nutritious and healthy foods and bring the community closer together. Fruit is picked by volunteers from homeowners fruit trees and then distributed to the volunteer pickers, homeowners, food distribution agencies, and to the project for juicing and fruit sales. In 2003 the Victoria Fruit Tree Project logged over 900 hours of volunteer time and picked and distributed over 20, 000 pounds of fruit.
This manual documents how Fruit Tree Projects operate from inception. It includes detailed information around project structure, volunteer management and includes descriptions of the many spin off projects such as fruit tree stewardship, poster contests, canning and preserving workshops, the Celebration of Apples, Fruit Tree Mapping and entrepreneurial activities that help to fund the project.
