Spring Ridge Commons Bee Garden

Spring Ridge Commons was built in Victoria's Fernwood community in 1999. The site was a vacant gravel lot for 10 years before it was transformed into a productive growing space. The idea behind the Commons is for the people in the community to have equal access to the food that is grown in the garden.

People are encouraged to give what they can and take what they need. Anyone can plant vegetables, tend the garden, or even help themselves to the edible plants and lovely flowers growing there.

In 2001, one corner of Spring Ridge Commons was set aside to build a bee garden. A team of youth from LifeCycles went to work and created a bee-friendly site that includes a variety of native flowers that attract pollinators. The first bee condo placed in the garden was entirely filled with blue orchard bee eggs within two weeks!
