Michigan Street Community Bee Garden
In 1999, LifeCycles, the James Bay Community Project and local residents saw great potential in the vacant greenspace on the corner of Menzies and Michigan streets. With support from the British Columbia Building Corporation and the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks, they planned and built a community garden with great success.
The 20 raised beds that are on the site not only help to feed community members, but also demonstrate how waterwise irrigation, soil building, composting, and organic gardening techniques can help to build a healthy, productive garden.

In 2001, the garden collective gave LifeCycles and the Bee project permission to build a nesting site in the Michigan Street Community Garden. In September, the bee garden was built with two bee boxes and an abundance of beautiful native plants and flowers. The bee garden will surely attract a family of bees to the Michigan Street Community Garden, and hopefully, we will see more blue orchard bees in James Bay than ever before.
