Green Seed Fund

LifeCycles works to build the capacity of individual, partnership, and cooperative ventures that contribute to the vibrancy and health of communities, the environment, local food systems and our local economy. Working together with VanCity, we have established the Green Seed Fund as a means to support local entrepreneurial ideas and initiatives and promote local agriculture.

Purpose of the fund:

The Green Seed Fund has been created to seed, enhance and support community economic development initiatives in the following key focus areas:

  • Green business
  • Food and agriculture enterprises
  • Cooperative initiatives

Who can apply:

The Green Seed Fund is available to individuals, groups, businesses, cooperatives, and organizations operating in the Capital Region.

Funding terms:

The fund will be accepting applications for requests between $100 and $500. This fund prioritizes equipment/materials purchase, training, mentorship, and facilitation of collaboration and networking within the region. It does not pay for ongoing expenses, or servicing debt. The project or purchase is to be completed by December 2007.

What the Fund has supported in the past:

In the past two years the Green Seed Fund has supported over 20 individuals in the following ways:

  • Purchase of Tools
  • Greenhouse construction, expansion or upgrade (materials for construction and addition of irrigation equipment such as drip tape and overhead irrigation)
  • Irrigation equipment for fields
  • Bee hive/equipment
  • Build marketing capacity -development of website and marketing materials, purchase of a computer
  • Infrastructure for Seed saving
  • Farmer's Market start up support purchase of tents and tables
  • Soil Amendments
  • Purchase of small garden shed to store tools and equipment.
  • Fencing to assist with transition to Certified IOPA Standard, support certification transition through replacement of for construction of Greenhouse
  • Chicken raising materials and supplies and construction of chicken tractors
  • Support cooperative marketing through purchase of tent, table and market signs
